A beautifully restored vintage tram departs Victoria Falls Railway Station as first light breaks over the bush, winding through Zambezi National Park — elephant and buffalo regularly cross the tracks at this hour — before rolling out onto the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge, 111 metres above the Zambezi gorge. Completed in 1905 as one of Cecil Rhodes’ stepping stones toward a Cape-to-Cairo railway, the Victoria Falls Bridge was prefabricated in England, shipped to the African interior, and assembled over a gorge more than 100 metres deep. This 2.5-hour guided tour takes visitors, clipped into a safety harness, onto the original 1905 catwalks beneath the bridge deck, looking directly down into the Batoka Gorge. The tour includes the Visitors Centre and its archive of historical photographs, and occasionally a bungee jumper can be seen launching from the platform above.
